Van Kaathoven Groep and Sint-Michielsgestel launch “3-in-1” collection of plastics, SSO and solid waste
Since January 4, the collection of plastics, SSO (source separated organics) and solid waste in the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel has been taking place simultaneously. To make this possible, the Van Kaathoven Groep developed a new vehicle with 3 compartments which can collect 2 fractions of raw materials and 1 waste fraction at the same time. In addition, the SSO and solid waste factions are automatically registered, making it possible to settle accounts with the citizens per collection.
Putting “People Planet Profit” into practice
For the residents of the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel, the primary result of the new system has been increased convenience. They can now put their waste materials out on the street for collection every two weeks regardless of whether they consist of plastics, SSO and/or solid waste. In contrast to the traditional method of collection, in which three trips have to be made through every street, everything can now be collected at one go. Besides causing fewer emissions and less traffic congestion in the residential neighbourhoods, the new 3-in-1 vehicle also provides the municipality with significant cost benefits, as it travels a great deal less than traditional vehicles.
Sint-Michielsgestel leads the way once more
With this step, the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel is again leading the way for the Netherlands: in 1998, the municipality first partnered with the Van Kaathoven Groep to set up an integrated process of waste collection which included a differentiated settlement of costs per household.
The Van Kaathoven Groep – half a century of innovation
This family-owned company, based in the southern Dutch province of Brabant, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. For half a century, it has proven itself, time and again, as an innovative niche player in waste processing and in recycling residual waste flows into new products. For example, it produces cat litter from SSO and makes biofuel from food remains in its own in-house facilities.

“This new 3-in-1 vehicle brings us one step closer to a world without waste and emphasizes the importance of ongoing efforts to separate valuable residual waste flows in order to preserve our stocks of raw materials."
